Introducing Sheriff Byron Lyons, a dedicated public servant with over 35 years of experience in law enforcement, corrections, and emergency medical services. Elected as Polk County Sheriff in 2021, Sheriff Lyons is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities. With an impressive background that includes graduating from the Kilgore Police Academy, serving as a Felony Investigator, and holding the esteemed position of Chief Deputy, Sheriff Lyons brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his role.
He is a respected member of the Texas Sheriff’s Association, the East Texas Police Officers’ Association, and the Deep East Texas Council of Government’s criminal justice committee. Sheriff Lyons’ dedication extends beyond his official duties, as he actively serves on the Mental Health Service Board of Trustees and has played a vital role in disaster relief efforts.
In addition, he has initiated programs such as the Polk County Sheriff’s Citizen Academy and internship opportunities for students interested in law enforcement careers. Reelect Sheriff Byron Lyons for a committed and experienced leader who prioritizes the safety and well-being of our community.
Sheriff Lyons, an esteemed member of the Burke’s Mental Health Service Board of Trustees, consistently demonstrates his commitment to enhancing community relationships and fostering inclusivity. Notably, he actively participated in a round table discussion sponsored by Sam Houston State University, focusing on Minority Relationships with Law Enforcement. Additionally, Sheriff Lyons served as a distinguished guest speaker for LEMIT of SHSU, sharing his invaluable insights and expertise. In times of adversity, such as the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Ike, the Onalaska Tornado, and ice storm Uri, Sheriff Lyons collaborated seamlessly with Polk County Emergency Management, FEMA, Texas Department of Safety, and numerous federal and state agencies. A leader dedicated to transparency and public engagement, Sheriff Lyons established the esteemed Polk County Sheriff’s Citizen Academy.
This comprehensive 13-week course, attended weekly for three hours, provides citizen cadets with a condensed yet immersive experience in the diverse realms of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, including Administration, Dispatch, Patrol, Narcotics, Criminal Investigation, and the Jail. With TCOLE instructors hailing from the Sheriff’s Office and guest speakers from various governmental agencies, the academy ensures a holistic understanding of law enforcement operations. The academy has already witnessed two graduating classes, with applications for the upcoming third academy soon to be accepted.
Furthermore, as part of his dedication to fostering educational opportunities, Sheriff Lyons and his office actively participated in the Externship Program sponsored by Deep East Texas Council of Government (DETCOG) in 2022, partnering with Corrigan-Camden ISD. This collaboration continued in 2023 with Livingston ISD, and the Sheriff now offers an internship program aligned with the Livingston ISD CTE program. Aimed at students aged 18 and above, this program allows for internships in Dispatch and Jail within the Sheriff’s Office while simultaneously obtaining a TCLOSE license upon graduation. Moreover, Sheriff Lyons prioritizes the safety and well-being of vulnerable individuals within the community.
Through grant funding, he has created two positions that focus on crimes against children. The Special Victim Liaison, a former detective functioning in a civilian capacity, provides crucial presentations on crimes involving children and teens to area schools. Additionally, the liaison serves as a vital member of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) and represents the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). By proactively addressing these sensitive issues, Sheriff Lyons exemplifies his unwavering commitment to protecting and supporting the community he serves.
